Sunlight Transport is a green technology supporting innovative architectural designs, improves employee productivity and health, and saves energy resulting in reducing the global carbon footprint.
What is Sunlight Transport?
The Swedish company Parans’, founded in 2003, developed a “Sunlight Transport” system that channels exterior ambient light and delivers it through fiber optic cables for illumination of building interior spaces.
The sunlight system provides directed visible spectrum solar lighting that optimizes light in a variety of ways including large surface area projection, ceiling directed, like light fixtures or a skylight or concentrated spot lighting. Interior emission is synonymous with light conditions outside the building. The result is reduced energy consumption during daylight hours. Cloudy days and nighttime lighting are augmented by energy efficient LED lights.
Sunlight Transport Benefits
The Parans’ system was conceived to aid the construction industry with innovative design opportunities that incorporated natural interior light deep inside the structure. Today’s 4th generation technology supports sunlight distribution 100 meters in and through a building. Artificial building light is a major energy user. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) electricity used for lighting in 2020 was 12% of total commercial sector electricity consumption and about 4% of total U.S. electricity consumption. Harnessing natural lighting reduces power grid demand resulting is less carbon dioxide pollution.
Sunlight and the Human Condition
An added advantage to the Parans’ system is providing room occupant’s a connection with the natural diurnal cycle. There are grand benefits to sunlight illumination. Sunlight increases the brain’s release of serotonin, a hormone that improves mood and helps a person feel calm and focused. Sunlight, particularly ultraviolet-B radiation, contributes to bone health and improves the bodies ability to absorb calcium and phosphorus. An added economic benefit is natural light increases workforce productivity and overall health.
